TBT: Addy’s Birthday

It’s Throw-Back Thursday!  Time to share a retired outfit that doesn’t see the light of day nearly enough.  All are welcome to participate.

Today I am featuring Addy’s birthday pinafore.  It was introduced in 1994 and retired in 2013.  I purchased mine that the Oshkosh Outlet Store (no longer in existence).  The outfit appears on the cover of Addy’s 4th book, “Happy Birthday Addy!”

The blouse and pinafore are separate garments.  The puffy sleeves, while not becoming on Jerry Seinfeld, are to die for on Addy.

The pinafore has tiny pockets with rick-rack trim.

It comes with a brown snood decorated with two yellow bird feathers, to remind Addy “to always let her spirit sing out.”  I have never had luck getting the snood on Addy’s head!

Addy is enjoying a rest in the summer shade, allowing you to see the lovely stockings that come with the outfit.  No shoes are included; she would wear her “meet” boots.

Looking good Addy!

P.S. Addy is my first AG (pre-BeForever).  I got her for my 40-something birthday from my mom.  Best gift ever!  Brianna and I read most of the AG books together when she was in 1st-2nd grade.  I thought Addy’s story could be a little disturbing for a 1st grader, but Brianna was Ok with historical drama.

American Girl Parody

You all know I work in an elementary school library, and I try to keep up with new releases especially in the graphic novel genre because it is so popular with our students.

“Be Prepared” is a terrific new graphic novel about a Russian immigrant girl trying to fit in with the kids at school.

In the first few pages she attends a birthday party which has a fun parody of American Girl dolls.

Of course, all the “cool” kids give the birthday girl American Girl presents.

Vera didn’t bring an 18″ doll to the party (because she doesn’t have one!), so while the girls play, she has to borrow a lowly Barbie doll.  Sigh.

Aw, Vera… we have all been there!  It can be hard to fit in.

We bought Brianna’s first doll (Josefina) from my sister-in-law at about 50% off.  It still felt like a big deal even at half-price.  When Saige came out about 8 months later, that was the start of the slippery slide into fandom!

How did you acquire your first AG?  Did the price require you to convince yourself or your parents?

Goodbye, Tenney

Yesterday American Girl announced they are retiring Tenney and Logan at the end of the year.

Caroline enjoying Tenney’s pajamas. Thanks, Kohls’ cash!

I saw that the Madison Children’s Museum sale is selling Tenney on the last day of the sale for $50.00 (no limit!) in a sealed box… and I wonder whether she will be sold without the “X” on her bottom identifying her as an MCM purchase.

In other news, I noticed when checking my Amazon WishList that the book for the new contemporary character was never released this summer.

The book (and doll, presumably) had a release date of June 26, 2018.  This seems to have been scrapped, for now, just like the re-release of Molly.

I feel like I come bearing bad news on this Sunday morning.  Maybe it is the humid rainy weather!  I hope American Girl can hang on in the tough times they seem to be facing.

Update: Z Yang and Gabriela are going at the of year, too.

TBT: Spring Flower Outfit

I was thinking about the Madison Children’s Museum Benefit Sale, which is this Saturday.  No sale for us this year, but we have bought 4 dolls there in the past few years.  Today I have Caroline, whom we purchased from the sale in 2015, modeling a Throwback Thursday fashion.

This is American Girl’s  2001 (retired in 2003) Spring Flower Outfit.  The trim on the waist goes all the way around (yay!).

IMG_1755

The outfit came with blue sandals and a fabric purse that has a similar trim on it.  I don’t believe we have either of those.  This outfit was a gift from my sister-in-law, who most likely bought it at the Madison sale many years ago.

The dress has a unique feature we don’t see much anymore from AG…

ZIPPER!

If you would like to join in #TBT, I would love to see one of your retired outfits.

AG Q&A – Back from a Deep Sleep

IMG_1750Hi Everyone!  Rebecca here.  I was nominated by Jenny at Say Hello to My Little Friends to participate in a fun AG question and answer game.  Jenny’s tag gave me the encouragement I needed to dust off the old WordPress app and have some fun!

THE RULES

List these rules in your post.
Create your own AG Q&A Tag button. If you don’t know how, you may use mine or skip this step.
Thank the person/doll that nominated you and give a link to the blog.
Come up with five questions for your nominees. You can include these in your tag post of send them separately. Do NOT ask any personal or inappropriate questions.
Have your doll that was nominated answer the questions given.
Nominate 3-5 other AG bloggers’ dolls.
Notify your nominees and send them a link to your tag post.

Here are the questions Jenny asked us:

If money were no object, what would be your dream vacation?

Hmm… this is hard but I would probably choose a trip to Hollywood to make my acting dreams come true.

IMG_1752What kind of unusual pet would you like to have?  (I’m thinking like a tiger, elephant, etc.)

I would love to own a zebra. They have such cool patterns, but unfortunately, there aren’t really any here in the U.S except for in the zoos.  I have a cute toy zebra on display in my bedroom though!

What is a hidden talent that you have that few people know about?

One of my hidden talents is math. A lot of kids in my class hate it, but I think it’s really interesting.

What is your favorite color?

My favorite color is definitely purple.

What is your favorite thing about your human?

I love my humans because they’re so loyal and they take me fun places (hint, hint!)

It looks like a lot of dolls and their humans have been tagged already, but if you are reading this and you want to join in, here are 5 questions for you!

  1. What is one book or movie you can read/watch again and again?
  2. Describe your dream house and its location.
  3. If you could see one musician/group from the front row, who would you choose?
  4. What is your favorite American Girl story?
  5. What is your favorite holiday?

Thanks for the opportunity to join in!
