You come across the most interesting things on American Girl’s Facebook page.
The question asked is, “Is Ivy coming back?” Usually AGs response would be something like “We have no plans to re-release friend dolls at this time.” Their reply to watch for announcements was new to me.
On one hand, I can see that the rumored doll “Z. Yang” from the American Girl stop motion YouTube videos could be confused with Ivy because they are both Asian. The name “Z. Yang” and “Popcorn” (dog) have been trademarked.
On the other hand, there is a new Julie mystery “Message in the Bottle” coming out in February and some have speculated that new items for Julie have been seen on eBay.
What do you make of this? It seems to crazy that 2017 would bring Felicity’s re-release, Gabriela McBride 2017 GOTY, Tenney Grant and her drummer Logan, plus additional dolls?
Well, surprise surprise… Santa found Gabriela’s new book!
I read the first few pages and I’m happily impressed. Gabriela’s mom owns a community dance studio and Gabriela also has a gift for dance. The book opens in Gabriela’s tap dance class, taught by Mama, or “Miss Tina”. Mama likens the girls in the class to Savion Glover’s dancers. Savion Glover is a famous African-American tap dancer; you might know him as the “feet” behind the movie “Happy Feet”. See below for a clip of Savion dancing with a “Happy Feet” penguin.
Gabriela goes by the nickname “Gabby.”
No better way to say hello to the 2017 GOTY than also saying good-bye to the 2016 girl. Lea’s bracelet came along with the book.
If Santa didn’t bring you the new American Girl book, check your local Barnes and Noble.
“Tenney” is definitely out there on the horizon as a new Contemporary American Girl. Indigo Bookstore is now showing the cover of “Tenney’s Journal” which releases at the end of January. We have the color aqua, a guitar, and a coral guitar pick to work with. Some have speculated that her name could be short for Tennessee and a country music connection.
As we learned with Melody, a book release may not correlate to a doll release at the same time.
Speaking of doll releases, the 2017 Girl of the Year book (and presumably the doll!) releases a month from now and we know barely anything about her, other than the author is Teresa Harris, an established author who has written books with African-American girl characters. When TrulyMe #46 was retired, speculation followed that she might be adapted into the 2017 GOTY (I recall this was based on American Girl stating on Facebook that she was being revamped).
What are your thoughts on the American Girl Cyber Monday sale? Personally, I thought it was pretty skimpy. Most major retailers offer free shipping and a percent discount. The items AG had on sale were things that have been kicking around for a while… many of the outfits were at the Oshkosh Outlet (now closed) last summer already. I’m happy that they are making these items available to everyone, but the sale seemed far from epic, especially without free shipping. Many of the items reportedly became unavailable while they were sitting people’s digital shopping carts and the commentary on AG’s Facebook page was decidedly unhappy.
(Update… Tenney’s release day is reportedly February 2 and there may be a boy doll available with her release named Logan Everett)
Have you been talking about the American Girl of the Year-2017 while I was busy painting Brianna’s room and reading books for the coming school year? The GOTY books for 2017 are posted on Amazon (no links below) with an accompanying author named Teresa Harris. Book #1 is released on Dec 27, 2016.
I have never read any of Ms. Harris’ other books, but she seems to write about African American female characters, so here’s hoping we might see a 2017 doll of color yet! If you would like to learn more about the author, head on over to the blog The Brown Bookshelf.
